Jan Van Ruymbeke was born in Gent/Belgium. He studied medicine at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and worked for several years as a general practitioner and medical advisor before starting his career in the pharmaceutical business. His first station was Cilag Belgium which was followed by Janssen Pharmaceutica where, as Franchise Director, he was in charge of infectious disease and dermatology. In 1996, he switched to Janssen-Cilag Hungary as a General Manager.

Before Jan Van Ruymbeke joined Grünenthal in 2005, he was Executive Director Pharma & Country President for Novartis South Africa. In 2007, he became Managing Director Grünenthal España. Until July 2010, Jan Van Ruymbeke was responsible for Spain and Portugal as Managing Director before he became Executive Vice President Grünenthal Latin America.
